The Government of India has identified urban areas as engine of economic growth hub. Till 2001, the Urban Population having 28% of the Country found to contribute 50 - 55 % of the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP). By 2011, it is estimated to contribute 60 - 65% (GDP) with an expected increase of 40% urban population in the Country, subject to sufficient Infrastructure and Basic Services are provided to them. For achieving this objective, it is considered essential that Mission Mode be adopted for implementation of urban infrastructure improvement programme in a time-bound in urban cities. Hence, Prime Minister of India launched "Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission" (JNNURM), a single largest scheme under Urban Development to cater the Infrastructure and Basic Services requirement of the Urban Population of the Country with the mission statement of reforms driven, fast track, community participation, accountability of ULBs towards citizens, transparency, planned development of urban towns/cities and mission objective to secure effective linkages between asset creation and asset management so that the Infrastructural services created are not only maintained efficiently but also become self-sustainable city or town after 20-25 years and ensure adequate investment of funds to fulfill deficiencies in the urban infrastructural services. There are 63 Cities/Towns having million plus population including State Capital had been identified for implementation of the Scheme. It (JNNURM) has two sub-missions, namely

JNNURM (UIG): - Meant for providing Basic Service to Urban Population, Urban Infrastructure Development in Urban Areas and reformation of Urban Governance System.

UIDSSMT:-Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for small & medium towns aims at improvement in urban infrastructure in towns and cities in a planned manner.
